My name is Annsley Brophy and I am a sophomore at Yuma High School in the small rural town of Yuma, Colorado. I am the oldest of four kids and have one sister and two brothers. I live on a farm/ranch that is 27 miles from the nearest town. I participate in many school activities including student council, Future Farmers of America (FFA), drama club, and Thespians. I also participate in sports, playing softball and basketball.
In 2007 I wrote the Yuma County Civic Initiative. It allows rural Yuma County students the opportunity to experience Colorado State Government first hand. Every year we sponsor 12 middle school students on a field trip to the state capitol building in Denver, Colorado. We also host a high school program called Senator for a Day for juniors and seniors. Rural education is a topic that is extremely important to me. I work very closely with Senator Greg Brophy and House Representative Cory Gardner on this subject. I have testified at the state capitol on teacher incentives and I am currently working on a bill that addresses teacher contract stipulations.
I am a past board member of the Young Americans Center For Financial Education. It is a bank located in Denver which provides financial opportunities to youth ages 0 to 21. I currently have the distinct honor of sitting on the Daniels Leadership Board. It is a philanthropic entity that also promotes finance literacy in youth amongst other youth oriented programs. These boards have taught me the importance of leadership, organization, and civic duty.
Being part of the inception of the Colorado Youth Advisory Board has been very rewarding. Building a program from infancy has its challenges. Our goal this year will be to work on our platform and efficiency. Our mission is to continue to strengthen our position at the capitol and to have a voice on issues that affect Colorado youth. I look forward to the upcoming year and the positive impact we can have.
